August 4, 2010 Overcome Boot Camp Intimidation! Intimidated by super fit, bionic athletes at the gym? Intimidated by brawny men who dominate the weight room? Intimidated by fancy weight machines and treadmills with all the bells and whistles? Intimidated by the word, Boot Camp? Overcome your fears and reach your fitness goals by tackling the mental hurdles. All shapes, sizes, ages, different motivational reasons, effort levels can benefit from a Marine Corps style workout at Warrior Fitness Boot Camp or any other gym or exercise program such as yoga or kickboxing. Many of us are fearful of the gym for various reasons. Someone who is older may feel that they are too old. Someone who is overweight may feel that people will look at them in a negative manner. Someone who is new may be intimidated because of the unknown. Someone may feel like he/she is not good enough or can't keep up. Others may feel like they will be stared at or criticized for whatever reason. The good news is... many of us have been in the above positions and there are lots of different body types and levels at the gym. The benefits of going to a gym (to feel better and get healthier) is worth overcoming your fears and dealing with them head on. Intimidation can be overcome with mental strength and some help with the following tips: 1) Assess your readiness by having an honest conversation with yourself and make sure you are exercising for yourself and for the right reasons. Then, mentally commit to making sacrifices for the benefits of exercise. 2) Be specific with your fitness goal whether it is losing 10 pounds in 6 months or finishing a 10K race or going to the gym 3 times a week. 3) Be realistic about your goal - make it doable and reasonable. 4) Set a timeframe for your fitness goal. 5) Start slowly! Example, if you are scared to run on a treadmill or try a class at Warrior Fitness, walk outdoors and build up your endurance and confidence. 6) Build your comfort zone by enlisting a friend to work out with you. 7) Find a program that works for you. Request for trial membership at a gym or try a class at Warrior Fitness for $20. Warrior Fitness Boot Camp is a great way to help you overcome your fears. The group setting environment and encouragement from your fellow Warriors will help you get into shape and can offer some long lasting companionship. Staying fit is easier when you find a workout that you enjoy and at the same time, you reap the benefits from working out. Most New Year's resolutions involve losing weight. Most times, we fail at keeping our resolutions. Here are some steps to help you succeed: Step 1: Keep it simple. Make a simple resolution and commit to it. Example, I will lose 20 pounds by July 1. Step 2: Keep it realistic. Losing 20 pounds over six months is a lot easier to commit to and succeed in doing than trying to lose 20 pounds in two months. Progress will be slower but you'll be able to really lose the weight. Step 3: Start now. There is no time like the present. Start with a walking program, light running program or take a trial class at WFBC. Exercise before breakfast so it's out of the way and nothing later in the day can distract you from exercising. Step 4: Continue, don't stop. Make your exercise a solid habit. It's ok to miss some days but resume the habit as soon as possible. Step 5: Keep the weight off after you have achieved your goal. You will not only lose weight but also build muscle. Keep exercising and applying what you have learned. This should be a lifetime plan. Step 6: Celebrate! Treat yourself for achieving your goal. Buy something, go to a spa, plan a fun vacation. You deserve it! December 4, 2009 WFBC wins Citysearch's annual Best Gym and Best Workout for 2009!
